DESCRIPTION
GUNTER HERBIG WAS BORN IN BRAZIL and grew up in Portugal and Germany. Influenced by such different cultures and aesthetic languages, Gunter has developed a highly personal, charismatic, and expressive style of playing and performance, which sets him well apart from his contemporaries. The balance of Brazilian sensuousness, Portuguese intense passion and German intellect and finesse are the hallmark of his playing. Gunter's dynamic and expressive sense of adventure has made him an audience favourite on the concert platform wherever he goes and has solicited universal praise by critics in the international music world.
Gunter is based in Wellington, NZ and combines a busy international performance schedule with a teaching position at Auckland University, where he lectures in classical guitar performance and chamber music. His best selling debut solo CD "HAUTURU – WHERE THE WINDS REST" was released in 2007 by Ode Records.
In 2009, Gunter released his second CD "PROSPERO DREAMING" with NZ guitar music by Douglas Lilburn and David Farquhar on the NAXOS label, the world's biggest classical music label. "PROSPERO DREAMING" opened as number one in the Radio New Zealand classical chart - a first for a New Zealand classical guitar CD ever!

Reviews
Absolute Master
" …(Gunter Herbig) is an absolute master of his métier… he performed with dreamlike secure virtuosity, from breathed harmonics to fully realised orchestral flights of an entirely explored dynamic scale…"
Hans Höfer, Coburger Tageblatt (Germany) in January 2006 |

Fabulous, totally and extraordinarily fabulous
His playing is incredible, how can you communicate such power with an instrument just made of wood and nylon strings? My goodness, it is incredible how he pulls them (the strings); this piece makes reference to the wind, how it makes its passage and comes to rest and Gunter manages to make us hear this wind...
...Fabulous, totally and extraordinarily fabulous.

Meltingly Beautiful
Guitar aficionados will appreciate Villa Lobos' Twelve Etudes where Herbig goes back to the composer's original manuscript, with meltingly beautiful results.
William Dart, New Zealand Herald, December 2007

5 stars review
Gunter Herbig is one of our finest guitarists, as adept at an allemande from an early lutenist as he is with the music that New Zealand composers have written for him. Brazilian-born, he also has a special gift for the Latin-American repertoire and inevitably imbues other music with some of its fire.
The essential character of much of the music on this CD comes from its sounding as if it might have been improvised on the spot. That Herbig has conveyed this impression, with no sacrifice of tonal beauty or structural logic, is a mark of his artistry.
