Performing as an acoustic duo Cy Winstanley (vocals and guitar) and Vanessa McGowan (vocals and bass) have a sound described as “love letters between Amy Mann and a slip-sliding Paul Simon”.
They are both professional musicians with over 10 years performance experience in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the USA and draw musical influences from jazz, pop, folk and country.
Their debut album with Her Make Believe Band was highly praised in the UK and New Zealand, described as “a delightful album… very sharp stuff” by Graham Reid. UK magazine Uncut described Cy as “a potent songwriter with a voice gently reminiscent of Paul Simon, while fellow Kiwi Vanessa McGowan adds beguiling harmonies”.
Playing their own original folk/pop songs and incorporating elements of western swing, bluegrass and pop Cy and Vanessa create a sound both engaging and toe-tapping and evoke the work of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings in their musical connection and full sound belying their duo’s size. |
