Parryphonalia
Parryphonalia is a four piece folk group, all accomplished musicians who have performed in the Wellington region, nationally and further afield. They bring tight vocal harmonies and a collection of new and old instruments to traditional and modern folk songs. Their range of familiar and new tunes has had popular performances at the Wellington Folk Festival, Waitangi Day Festival of the Elements, Acoustic Routes, Mainly Acoustic Mayfair and the Southern Cross.

Nigel Parry is rapidly becoming an established player in the Wellington region with a strong mellow voice and sympathetic guitar playing. Philippa Boy is a multi-instrumentalist who has appeared on stage and in film. She plays traditional hurdy-gurdy, recorders, clog fiddle and sings too. Susan Rose brings her clear soprano voice to Parryphonalia and also performs with Sage and 10DD. Niels Gedge is a well known local musician and performer with an engaging bass vocal style.

The quartet formed in 2013, successfully performed and then progressed to studio recording.

Four piece, two piece and solo options are available.

Reviews

“Nigel Parry’s closing set was a delight – a nicely balanced selection of songs, beautifully sung and played and enhanced by some very accomplished accompanists: Julian Ward on guitar , Philippa Boy on ocarina and hurdy gurdy, and Niels Gedge and Sue Rose on backing vocals. James Taylor’s ‘Millworker’ got an airing, and Alan Taylor’s ‘Roll On the Day’, but the highlights for me were Nigel’s own songs. ‘Ship of Dreams’, with Julian’s harp-like guitar backing had its first public performance and ‘The Road is Long’ was given the full, rich a cappella treatment. I can see that one becoming an old friend..” Meow and Acoustic Routes - 7 December 2013

“A prominent singer/guitarist with a big strong rousing voice that lends itself equally well to heartache ballads, rock & roll and sea shanties.” Mainly Acoustic - 28 September 2013
